$150,000 in Scholarships Awarded Sunshine Insurance – Elmira College Essay Competition

This year marks the 10th year of a unique partnership between Elmira College, Elmira, New York and Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Limited that has provided a substantial amount of scholarships to deserving Bahamian students. On Saturday, November 19th, 2011, Morganne Bethel, an 11th grade student of Queen’s College was awarded a $60,000 scholarship to attend Elmira College in Elmira, New York. Morganne was one of the ten finalists chosen from a large number of applicants that submitted essays on the topic “An Original Idea to Boost the Bahamian Economy.” As a chosen finalist, Morganne, along with nine other remarkable students gave formal presentations before a panel of judges made up of Elmira College representatives and Elmira College Alumni. Morganne’s original idea was “BahaMail” – a reliable overnight delivery service to interconnect the islands of The Bahamas. The lead judge, Mr. Michael Rogers, Assistant to the President and Director of Public Relations of Elmira College, commented that all of the students did exceedingly well and the final decision was not an easy one; however, Morganne’s enthusiasm , clear product branding and confident demonstration of research garnered top marks from the panel of judges. In accepting the scholarship, Morganne was truly overjoyed and she expressed her sincere gratitude to Elmira College and the organizers of the event for affording this opportunity to Bahamian students.

The Elmira College SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) Scholarship Program 2011 also awarded each of the three runners-up with $30,000 scholarships to attend Elmira College. The runners-up were Natasha Jn-Simon, a 12th grade student of CR Walker High School; Khristian Johnson, an 11th grade student at Queen’s College and Ariana McWeeney, an 11th grader at St. Andrews School.
